Obviously you guys know it can do animation, which is why you're here, but I wanted to go over exactly what Blender is capable of for those who don't already know. First of all, Blender is completely free and open source, which is amazing because that means anybody has access to it.<br/>It specializes in 3D CG, which means it can do 3D animation and 3D modeling. Despite being a free software, it has been used in many professional projects, including feature films, games, TV series, and tons of other projects you can see here. But what you might not know is that it can also do video editing, compositing, painting, sculpting, visual effects, cloth particle fluid, and smoke simulations, 3D printing, 2D animation, and real-time rendering.<br/>Now that's pretty impressive, but we only care about the animation aspect of it in this course. So how does it compare to other industry standard animation software like Maya? Well, Blender's animation works a little differently than other software, and I personally like it better. I've used Maya and Blender for animation in the past, and I believe Blender is far more efficient in its animation workflow.<br/>Obviously you can get used to whichever one you use more, but Blender has a big advantage over Maya, which is the dope sheet. The dope sheet is something we'll get into later in the course, but just so you know, it's basically something that allows you to manipulate your key frames very efficiently. In Maya the only way to manipulate key frames in a holistic way is with the graph editor, which is far more complex than it has to be. Maya does have a dope sheet, but hardly anyone uses it because it's incredibly inflexible. Compared to dope sheet manipulation, graph out of their manipulation can slow animators down.<br/>It's worth noting that graph editor manipulation is very powerful in both Blender and Maya, but it shouldn't be necessary for the more basic tasks. Another thing Blender has over Maya is its hot key workflow, which speeds up animators compared to Maya. It's a small difference, but it can add up over long periods of time.<br/>And one big thing Bunder has over any other software is the huge community. Because Blender is such a good free software, there are so many Blender users out there in the world that I guarantee you that any question you have has probably already been answered. And that's not to mention the amazing videos and tutorials that already exist as resources for you to learn from. One example is the Blender fundamental series on the Blender foundation YouTube channel, which I made. Again, you can refer back to that at any time if you have any questions about specific parts of Blender. So hopefully you're a little less scared of Blender and you know what it is, and you're ready to install it. In the next video we'll be walking you through the exact steps on how to install Blender onto your computer.")
